Energy-Saving Tips for Office Buildings

LIGHTS

  • Turn lights off in unoccupied rooms and let windows provide light wherever possible.
  • Use timers and keep them properly set (i.e., no outside lights during the day).
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR® qualified fluorescent bulbs, including task lighting on desks.
  • Use LED lamps for exit signs instead of incandescent bulbs.
  • Replace T12 fixtures with High Performance T8 (HPT8) or T5 lighting systems.
  • Install occupancy sensors to shut off lights when rooms are not in use.

HEATING & COOLING

  • Turn off fans when the building is not in use.
  • Install ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostats and locking covers to prevent tampering.
  • Make sure doors and windows have tight seals and keep them closed when running your air conditioning system.
  • Check equipment regularly (evaporative coolers, fans, pumps, etc.) for proper operation and maintenance needs.
  • Properly insulate all exterior walls, ceilings, and wall cavities.
  • Use ENERGY STAR qualified roofing material with high reflectance.

OFFICE EQUIPMENT

  • Activate "sleep" mode on computers and monitors for highest energy efficiency.
  • Turn off printers, copiers, and coffee makers at the end of the day, and desk lamps and fans when not in use.
