Choose an ENERGY STAR® refrigerator and save.

ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators use half the electricity of standard models manufactured before 1993. Since ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators use advanced features such as better insulation and more efficient technology, they can save you up to $255 over the life of the appliance. The money you save on energy can more than make up for the cost of buying a new ENERGY STAR model. Plus, when you purchase select ENERGY STAR refrigerators and freezers, you could be eligible for a $50 rebate.

What makes a refrigerator energy efficient?

ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators are required to use 15% less energy than models not labeled with the ENERGY STAR logo. Refrigeration technology has improved significantly in the past 40 years. Three key improvements add up to greater efficiency:

  • High-efficiency compressors use less energy to operate the refrigerator, are often quieter than regular compressors, and create less heat while they are running.
  • Improved insulation located in doors and exterior walls helps food stay cold.
  • More precise temperature and defrost mechanisms help the refrigerator operate efficiently while making sure food is stored at the optimum temperature.
