Air sealing is the number one recommendation by Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® contractors.
Reducing the amount of air that leaks in and out of your home is a cost-effective way to cut heating and cooling costs, improve durability, increase comfort, and create a healthier indoor environment. Air sealing alone does not eliminate the need for proper insulation to reduce heat flow through the building envelope.
Do-it-yourself projects such as caulking and weather-stripping are simple and effective air-sealing techniques that offer quick returns of one year or less. However, the best way to achieve maximum energy savings from air sealing and insulation is to participate in a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR project. This also makes you eligible for incentives from Efficiency Vermont.

Ventilation is important in an energy-efficient home
Air sealing should always be accompanied by controlled fresh-air ventilation. It helps purge contaminants and moisture from the air in your home. As a part of a professional energy audit a Home Performance with ENERGY STAR contractor will assess your home’s ventilation needs for indoor air quality, something that is often overlooked with do-it-yourself projects.
Reduce your energy bills by adding insulation
Whether you live in an older home or newer construction, chances are you can reduce your energy bills by adding more insulation. Before adding insulation to your home, we recommend that your home is properly air sealed.
How do you know if you need more insulation? First, you need to find out how much insulation you currently have in your home and where it is. A Home Performance with ENERGY STAR audit will include an insulation assessment.
