This session provides a basic understanding of a Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rating. HERS ratings are provided to all successful participants in Efficiency Vermont’s Residential New Construction Service and are often used to document compliance with Vermont’s Residential Building Energy Standards (Vermont’s energy code). This session will explain the basics of the HERS rating, how long it has been around, and why it was developed for the mortgage industry. When you finish this session, you will be able to:

    • Describe the basic reference home compared to the HERS rating
    • Explain the three types of HERS ratings
    • Find the public database to verify the HERS rating
    • Explore the RESNET Appraisal Portal

These four objectives are extremely important and will give appraisers confidence in finding. using, and explaining HERS ratings. Real estate agents will gain useful tips for listing homes with good HERS rating.
